His organization, the Isha Foundation, has a global reach, addressing social and environmental issues. Yet, despite his fame, Sadhguru’s life story remains shrouded in a blend of verifiable events and mystical experiences.
In this article, we will delve into Sadhguru’s life – from his curious childhood in Mysore, India, to the profound spiritual awakening that launched him onto a global stage. We will explore the key events and philosophies that have shaped him, offering insights into the man behind the influential spiritual movement.
Early Life in Mysore
Jaggi Vasudev was born in Mysore, Karnataka, India, in 1957, the youngest of four children. His father was an ophthalmologist with the Indian Railways, resulting in the family relocating frequently, exposing young Jaggi to a diverse range of cultures. From a young age, he exhibited a profound connection with nature. He’d often disappear into the nearby forests for days, returning with intimate knowledge of the local flora and fauna. Snakes were a particular fascination, and he was known to carry them around with ease – much to the consternation of his family.
He was a bright and inquisitive child with a rebellious streak. Formal education held little allure; he preferred riding his motorcycle, playing sports, and exploring the outdoors. He completed his primary and secondary schooling in Mysore and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Mysore.
The Motorcycle Diaries
After graduating, Vasudev resisted societal expectations of a conventional career. He dabbled in various businesses, including poultry farming and construction. His free spirit and love for travel found expression in extensive motorcycle journeys across India. These travels exposed him to a cross-section of society, broadening his perspectives on life and its possibilities. In his own words, “I looked at life completely uninfluenced by any social or religious structures around me.”
A Mystical Encounter Transforms His Life
A pivotal moment occurred in his early twenties. One afternoon in 1982, Vasudev ascended Chamundi Hill, a sacred place overlooking Mysore. Sitting on a rock, an extraordinary experience engulfed him. He describes a sense of unity where the boundaries between himself and the universe dissolved. “Suddenly, I could not tell what was inside and outside of me…It lasted for about ten to fifteen minutes, but after that, for several hours, I could not tell what was me and what was not me.”
This overwhelming experience of boundlessness shattered his existing worldview. Driven by an uncontrollable urge for deeper self-discovery, he abandoned his businesses and embarked on a period of introspection and travel.
Diving into Yoga
During his journeys, Vasudev encountered yoga, not as a set of exercises, but as a profound science of inner exploration. He immersed himself in yogic practices under the guidance of Malladihalli Swami. The depth of this yogic experience and its transformative power had a profound impact on his life’s trajectory.
In 1983, he began sharing his knowledge through yoga classes. His unconventional style, devoid of rigid dogma and peppered with humor, found resonance. Over time, his programs grew in popularity, leading to the establishment of the Isha Yoga Center near Coimbatore, India in 1992, which became the headquarters of the Isha Foundation.
Sadhguru: The Name and Mission
The name “Sadhguru” is not a personal one but a title. It means “uneducated guru,” highlighting that his wisdom stems from inner experience rather than scriptural knowledge. Sadhguru’s unique style blends ancient yogic knowledge with a pragmatic, modern approach. He emphasizes self-transformation through “Inner Engineering” practices, meditation techniques, and a yogic lifestyle.
