An MP-MLA court found gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty of kidnapping Umesh Pal in 2006 and sentenced them to life in prison. Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, Ahmad’s brother, and six others were acquitted in the case. According to government counsel Gulab Chandra Agrahari, special MP-MLA court judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla found Ahmad, lawyer Saulat Hanif, and Dinesh Pasi guilty in the case. According to Agrahari, the three were found guilty under Indian Criminal Code section 364-A (kidnapping or abduction with the intent to murder). The provision allows for a maximum punishment of death.
